Simple Oven-Baked Kibbeh

  • 1 1/2 cups bulgur wheat
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup fresh mint, finely chopped (optional)
  • olive oil

Soak the bulgur wheat in warm water for 20 minutes. Drain well and set aside.

Preheat the oven to 350. Saute the onion and garlic over medium heat until translucent, about 2-3 minutes. In a large bowl, combine the bulgur wheat, beef, onion, garlic and seasonings.

Press the mixture into a 9×12 baking dish. With a knife, score small squares or diamonds shapes all the way through (this will help make sure the kibbeh cooks in the center). Drizzle the top with olive oil and bake for 35-40 minutes. Serve with an extra drizzle of olive oil and splash of lime.

Traditional Lebanese kibbeh is made with a lot more seasoning, including all-spice and cinnamon. It’s delicious! But over the years and based on my family’s taste buds, I’ve simplified it to this recipe to make it quick and easy for a weeknight meal.
